Geopiers Installation - Enhancing Soil Stability Installing Geopiers

Geopiers (aka Rammed Aggregate Piers) are critical in constructing the Dana Point Harbor parking structure. GMU is responsible for the quality control (QC) of the Geopiers, helping to confirm that they are installed correctly and perform as expected.





Geopiers work by densifying and reinforcing the soil, reducing settlement, and increasing the load-bearing capacity. This technology is instrumental in areas with challenging soil conditions, providing a reliable foundation for constructing the parking structure. At the Harbor, the soils below the parking structure were highly variable, with soft and loose layers. In addition, a high tidal-influenced water table limited corrective grading options. Geopiers were selected to improve uniformity, reduce settlements, and increase bearing (and save concrete costs due to reduced footing sizes).
