THE BASTANCHURY ROAD WIDENING PROJECT

Enhancing Mobility and Safety

GMU is proud to have played a key role in the recently completed Bastanchury Road Widening Project in Yorba Linda. This important infrastructure project was designed to enhance mobility and safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians along a key segment of Bastanchury Road, between Casa Loma Avenue and Eureka Avenue.

Project Overview

The project involved the transformation of a two-lane roadway into a more efficient four-lane thoroughfare, with a second-thru lane added in each direction. In addition to improving traffic flow, the project included significant safety upgrades, such as improved vertical line of sight and the installation of new traffic signals at key intersections. The enhancements also featured the construction of a new retaining wall and block wall structure, a new sidewalk on the north side of the road, and a reconstructed multipurpose trail with improved landscaping on the south side.

These improvements align with the City’s General Plan Circulation Element and are expected to greatly improve regional mobility. The project began in early 2023 and was completed in Summer 2024.

GMU’s Role and Contributions

GMU was engaged to provide comprehensive geotechnical and pavement engineering services during the project design phase. Our team’s expertise ensured that the road widening was designed to the highest standards, with careful consideration given to the unique geological conditions of the area. During the construction phase, GMU continued to support the project with geotechnical observation, field testing, and materials inspection services. Our registered special inspectors were on-site to oversee critical aspects such as concrete, masonry, and pile installations, ensuring that all work met the required specifications and standards.

Navigating Challenges

Rainy Season Solutions: One of the notable challenges encountered during the project was the extremely wet subgrade on the north side of Bastanchury Road during the 2023 rainy season. This condition posed a risk to the stability of the road and could have resulted in delays and excessive additional costs. However, GMU’s proactive approach to problem-solving made a significant difference. Our team provided extensive consultation during this period, recommending and overseeing the cement treatment of the subgrade to a depth of 18 inches. This solution stabilized the road and saved the client valuable time and money by preventing potential delays and complications.

Special Features and Value-Added Services GMU’s involvement in the Bastanchury Road Widening Project went beyond the standard scope of services. Our team’s commitment to excellence and our proactive approach to challenges allowed us to provide value-added services that significantly benefited the project. By addressing the wet subgrade issue swiftly and effectively, we ensured that the project stayed on track and within budget while also enhancing the long-term durability of the roadway.

Conclusion

The Bastanchury Road Widening Project is a shining example of how thoughtful design, expert engineering, and proactive problem-solving can come together to create a safer, more efficient transportation corridor. GMU is honored to have contributed to this important project, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the City of Yorba Linda and other public agencies to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents.
