Sunset Avenue SCWD Structural Engineering Project of the Year Award

Structural Engineering Excellence: Sunset Avenue Roadway Restoration

GMU Engineers and Geologists are proud recipients of the Structural Engineering Project of the Year Award for our role in the Sunset Avenue Roadway Restoration project with the South Coast Water District (SCWD). This award-winning project exemplifies GMU's commitment to delivering innovative and effective solutions in structural engineering.

Project Overview: On March 5, 2023, an unexpected slope failure near Sunset Avenue in Laguna Beach led to significant damage, impacting homes, utilities, and the roadway. SCWD collaborated with GMU for an emergency response and repair effort to restore the affected area.

GMU's Comprehensive Services:

GMU's role encompassed geotechnical, structural, and civil engineering aspects to prepare repair plans. We conducted emergency site assessments, geotechnical investigations, lab testing, slope stability, and structural analyses. Our services also included designing reinforced concrete caissons, shotcrete wall faces, and providing construction management services.

Benefits and Achievements:

By adopting a streamlined approach and leveraging our expertise in various engineering disciplines, GMU delivered a rapid turnaround from investigation to remediation design to construction. Our "one-stop-shop" approach ensured efficient coordination and communication, resulting in the project's completion in a fraction of the time typically required for such repairs.

The Sunset Avenue Roadway Restoration project showcases GMU's capabilities in emergency response, innovative engineering solutions, and effective project management. We are honored to have contributed to the restoration efforts and to be recognized with the Structural Engineering Project of the Year Award.
