GMU provides comprehensive Construction Management Advisor (CMA) Services for geotechnical, geo-structural (soil nail walls, slope tie-backs MSE walls) and pavement projects. Services include schedule and invoice review, RFI response and tracking, change order evaluation and tracking and client contact interface. Supplementing our CMA services GMU has been providing comprehensive Construction Monitoring Services for over 30 years. In addition to pre-construction surveys, comprehensive geotechnical instrumentation installation and monitoring capabilities as well as construction vibration and sound monitoring, GMU also offers comprehensive Storm Water Services and Construction Blast Consulting Services.

Our complete range of services is applied before, during and after construction to verify stability, meet performance goals and reduce the potential for unexpected problems. GMU’s engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers are specialists in evaluating soil, rock and groundwater conditions for proposed and existing developments. Laboratory Testing

GMU is one of only a few Southern California geotechnical engineering firms to operate a complete in-house soil and paving testing laboratory. GMU also provides complete construction materials testing. GMU’s lab is certified by four different southern California agencies and employs a complete staff of experienced, qualified, and certified technicians. Testing is provided in accordance with ASTM, Greenbook and Caltrans standards. A complete list of tests can be found via the appropriate links below.

Rough GradingGMU has assembled field teams to observe and test all grading operations for some of the biggest grading projects in Southern California including:

  • Crystal Cove in Newport Coast
  • Ladera Ranch in South Orange County
  • Talega in San Clemente
  • Santaluz in San Diego

All teams are led by both an engineering geologist and a geotechnical engineer. Field personnel includes: engineering technicians, field geologists and geotechnical laboratory technicians. Senior personnel have decades of experience. The entire field team is then backed up by a professional office staff of engineers and geologists who evaluate and engineer field modifications as required. In addition, a QA/QC engineer is also assigned to regularly evaluate the field data.
Precise Grading/ Construction

One of the keys to GMU’s success during precise grade and construction phases is the multi-disciplined background of our engineering technicians.  Many of our technicians have construction experience and are multi-trained and certified not only as engineering soils technicians but also as special inspectors.  This enables GMU staff to view the project as a whole and provide unparalleled input to the project superintendent.

During precise grading and/or construction GMU is in the field again monitoring all of the geotechnical aspects of construction including: fill placement to achieve precise grades, utility trench and retaining wall backfill and subgrade excavation and preparation for all improvements.  In addition, GMU performs observation and testing for new pavement sections as well as special inspection for reinforced concrete, masonry and post tensioned slabs.

Special Inspection

GMU’s special inspection team has the resources to staff all projects with experienced, certified and professional personnel. Most of GMU’s technicians are crossed trained and certified as both special inspectors and geotechnical engineering technicians. By having cross-trained and multi-certified inspectors as well as a policy of no “4 hour minimums” GMU can provide the project with cost effective services most other firms cannot provide.

Pavement Engineering

GMU has been offering full service pavement engineering services for over 2 decades throughout Southern California, ranging from pavement evaluation and new construction design to construction observation, testing, and management. GMU offers state of the art design solutions that balance project specific needs and stakeholder costs. In addition, because GMU employs experienced geotechnical, civil, and pavement engineers, our solutions integrate aspects of each discipline resulting in cost effective designs and minimizing the potential for future problems. Forensic Engineering and Expert Witness Consultation

Major landowners, municipalities, utilities and attorneys regularly turn to GMU for forensic engineering services related to landslides, retaining walls, post-tensioned slabs, soil settlement and other geotechnical or geo-structural/geo-civil issues. Our services have been provided for various type projects including blast consulting for residential and commercial developments, reservoirs, pipelines, tunnels, dams and quarries and vibration monitoring during construction operations including blasting, pile driving, sheet pile installation, drilling for caisson/piles and grading operations. Our company takes pride in the fact that our projects are managed by a project manager of the firm who maintains continuing, personal project involvement through project completion.
