Inn at the Mission – Permanent Shoring Wall

November 30, 2020 by

Scheduled to open Winter 2019. 4-star luxury boutique Hotel adjacent to the historic Mission of San Juan Capistrano.

GMU Structural completed the structural design, details, and construction observation and testing for the soldier pile retaining wall between the sites parking lot and the offramp of the 5 freeway at Ortega Hwy. This unique retaining wall had to be designed with numerous constraints. Between existing utilities adjacent to the wall alignment, utilities that had to be relocated based on the proposed wall alignment, and an adjacent Cal-Trans right-of-way, this was not your regular design. What makes this wall unique is its’ rustic look, permanent stained and varnished horizontal wood lagging bolted to painted steel soldier

Private Residences

November 30, 2020 by

GMU Structural has completed the structural design, details and calculations for numerous front, back and side yard improvements for single family residences. GMU Structural recently completed a full structural design and construction oversite for numerous improvements for a private residence in Laguna Beach. Improvements included CMU block retaining walls and pilasters with multi-colored stone veneers, a fire pit, a water feature and numerous planters. We work closely with your landscape architect to ensure your outdoor improvements are constructed properly

TCWD Spillway Replacement Design

November 30, 2020 by

GMU Structural has recently completed the geotechnical investigation, structural design, details, construction bidding oversight, construction observation, and special inspection services for the reconstruction of a failed spillway for the Trabuco Water District. Full structural design comprised of reinforced concrete upper and lower head walls and a reinforced shotcrete spillway deck. GMU Structural provided all the construction specifications and provided value engineering throughout the project.

Poppy Trail MSE Walls

November 14, 2014 by

GMU provided geo-structural design for several mid-slope MSE walls.  The walls were an integral part of the project as they allowed for the construction of two developable pads.  The sale of the pads greatly reduced the overall project costs and made the project economically viable.

Poppy Trail Landslide Rolling Hills

September 19, 2014 by

The Poppy Trail Landslide failed in 2005, resulting in closure of a residential access road to multiple homes, and damage to one outbuilding. GMU was retained to provide geotechnical investigation and design services to repair the landslide and reconstruct two residential building pads. The project presented significant challenges, including steep terrain, complex geologic conditions, adjacent properties with multiple structures and improvements, and time constraints to repair the road and provide permanent access for the residents. GMU conducted a geotechnical investigation to evaluate the complex geologic structure and failure mechanism, and prepared a repair design that included removal and reconstruction of the slope using standard grading methods, geo-reinforcement (both global and surficial), and a complex subsurface drainage system. GMU was retained to provide both observation and testing during construction, as well as construction management advisor services. Challenges during construction included sequenced grading to remove the landslide debris, narrow slot excavations using low-vibratory equipment to minimize movement of the landslide during removal, limited area to stockpile materials during removal, development of a monitoring program along adjacent property lines, and constant communication with the project team, the governing agencies, and the residents. GMU worked closely with the contractor and civil engineer during construction to solve problems quickly and meet scheduling deadlines. The project was completed successfully in 2012.

Crystal Cove MSE Walls, Newport Beach, CA

September 19, 2014 by

GMU designed numerous MSE walls throughout the Crystal Cove community.  The walls were largely mid-slope walls built during rough grading operations.  Our services included: geotechnical engineering as wells as structural calculations, plans, and specifications along with constructions observations, inspections and testing.

Joplin Youth Center Roadway and Slope Improvements, Trabuco, Canyon, CA

September 13, 2014 by

GMU was awarded a project from County of Orange Public Works that involved repairing heavy erosion damage that occurred with the confines of the Joplin Youth Center. GMU was tasked with developing geotechnical recommendations and then integrating those into a set of grading plans and specifications. Design was also provided for shotcrete and subdrainage stabilization measures.
